Phoenix police officers shot and killed a 29-year-old man and arrested a woman he was with after responding to a trespassing call Thursday morning, officials confirmed.

The shooting occurred around 3:50 a.m., near Seventh Avenue and Pima Street, south of Buckeye Road, Phoenix police Sgt. Vince Lewis said.

Two officers originally responded to the area separately in reference to a trespassing call and the caller's concerns over recent attempted break-ins and drug activity in the area, police said.

When they arrived, police found a man and a woman sitting in a Lincoln Town Car, Lewis said.

The man opened a car door and a gun fell to the ground, Lewis said. Officers began struggling with the man as he reached for the gun, he said.

One of the officers began punching the man, then fired a stun gun at the man, briefly disabling him. However, after the officer released the stun gun the man continued resisting, according to Lewis.

Police, in an updated statement later in the day, said the man pointed the gun at the officers, which prompted both officers to shoot the man.

He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. He had not been identified as of Thursday afternoon.

The woman was arrested on an unrelated felony warrant. Her identity was not released.

The two officers sustained minor injuries in the struggle.

Both were identified only as male officers, one with three years service on the force, and the other with two years.
